Following a 7–9 record in his third season as head coach, franchise CEO Tommy Smith and general manager Ruston Webster requested that he replace at least six assistant coaches. Munchak disagreed with these specific directives and refused to fully enact the changes. Consequently, he was relieved of his position immediately. Earlier in his coaching career, a notable incident occurred during a 2015 NFL playoff game against the Cincinnati Bengals. While serving as the Pittsburgh Steelers' offensive line coach, Munchak yanked Bengals player Reggie Nelson's hair, resulting in a 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty. The NFL initially issued a $10,000 fine, but it was later rescinded after officials determined the contact was inadvertent.
